THINKING BACKWARDS means understanding the full impact of your subject from cradle to grave, or from cradle to cradle. Take inventory, understand all inputs and outputs, unravel all the pieces, find improvements.  

Break a product, system or service into its key Elements and Functions, then consider each over the designated lifespan in terms of
       * real impact
       * emotional impact
       *  the impact of public perception
       * economic impact.  

Thinking Backwards is a particularly useful tool for planning and delivering campaigns and ensuring that the end of life consequences for the product, the campaign and the customer are understood.
